TPM-Backed Full Disk Encryption Now Available on Ubuntu Desktop

Coming to Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic

Based on Ubuntu Core's FDE design, Canonical is bringing TPM-backed full disk encryption to classic Ubuntu Desktop systems starting with Ubuntu 2310 Mantic. TPM (Trusted Platform Module) devices have two main implementations: TPM 1.2 and TPM 2.0. This post goes over the installation steps for the TPM2 stack (tpm2-tss, tpm2-abrmd, and tpm2-tools) on Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS.

Key Points:

  • TPM-backed FDE now available on Ubuntu Desktop starting with 23.10 Mantic.
  • This feature leverages the FDE design from Ubuntu Core.
  • TPM devices come in two main implementations: TPM 1.2 and TPM 2.0.
  • The installation steps for the TPM2 stack are provided for Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS.
