Argentina vs Ecuador: Messi scores as Argentina starts World Cup qualifying campaign with a win
A lone goal from Lionel Messi gave Argentina a 1-0 home win over Ecuador in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The match was played at the Estadio Monumental de Buenos Aires in front of a crowd of over 50,000 fans.
Messi scored the only goal of the game in the second half, with a left-footed shot from outside the box. It was his 71st goal for Argentina, and his ninth in World Cup qualifiers.
The win gives Argentina a good start to their qualifying campaign, as they look to book their place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ecuador, meanwhile, will be disappointed with the result, but they will have another chance to qualify for the World Cup when they face Peru in their next match.
