Metamizole A Pain Reliever With Serious Risks

Metamizole: A Pain Reliever with Serious Risks

What is Metamizole?

Metamizole is a pain reliever that is also used to treat muscle spasms and fever. It is not approved for use in the United States due to its rare but serious side effects, including a potentially fatal blood disorder called agranulocytosis.

Risks of Metamizole

Metamizole can cause a number of side effects, including:

  • Skin rashes
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Agranulocytosis (a potentially fatal blood disorder)

The risk of agranulocytosis is highest in people who take metamizole for long periods of time or who have certain underlying medical conditions, such as kidney or liver disease.

Alternatives to Metamizole

There are a number of other pain relievers that are available over-the-counter or by prescription. These include:

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
  • Naproxen (Aleve)

These medications are generally safe and effective for most people. However, it is important to talk to your doctor before taking any pain reliever, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions.
