How to Reset an iPhone

When to Reset Your iPhone

Factory resetting your iPhone may be necessary if you're experiencing significant issues or if you're planning to sell or give away your device.

Create a Backup

Before resetting your iPhone, create a backup to save your data. You can do this via iCloud or by connecting your phone to a computer and using iTunes or Finder.

Types of Resets

You can perform a soft or hard reset on your iPhone:

  • Soft Reset: Restarts the device without affecting data or settings. Useful for minor problems like freezing apps.
  • Hard Reset (also known as a factory reset or recovery mode reset): Erases all data on the device and restores factory settings. Use this for major issues or before selling the phone.

How to Perform a Soft Reset

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side (sleep/wake) button until the Apple logo appears.

How to Perform a Hard Reset Using Settings

  1. Go to Settings > General > Reset.
  2. Select Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode if prompted, then tap Erase iPhone to confirm.

How to Perform a Hard Reset Using Recovery Mode

  1. Connect your iPhone to a computer and open iTunes or Finder.
  2. Follow the steps for a soft reset.
  3. When the Apple logo appears, continue holding the Volume Down button until you see the recovery mode screen.
  4. In iTunes or Finder, select Restore iPhone to perform a factory reset.

Tips

  • If you're having trouble connecting to iTunes or Finder, try using a different USB cable or computer.
  • If you've forgotten your passcode, you won't be able to perform a hard reset using the Settings menu. Use recovery mode instead.
  • Once you've reset your iPhone, you'll need to set it up again like a new device.
